Hand Arm Vibration
Syndrome Further Information Exposure to vibration can cause damage to hands and
fingers including:
Impaired blood circulation Damage to
nerves supply Muscloskeletal
damage
This damage can lead to whitening of the
fingers in the cold, numbness/tingling, reduced dexterity and
reduced grip strength. Collectively these injuries are known as
Hand arm vibration syndrome. HAVS Screening Limited
is now able to offer a full medical assessment for HAVS, which
includes three standardised objective tests to assess the extent
of the nerve and blood vessel damage.
What will happen during a HAVS
assessment? You will have an examination by a doctor and be asked to
perform three tests with a technician. The doctor will ask
about your previous exposure to vibration, the problems you have
with your hands, examine them and ask you to perform some simple
tests. The three tests the technician will describe to you
assess the damage to the nerves and the blood vessels in hands and
fingers. They will measure the sensitivity of the fingers to
temperature, vibration and see how quickly the fingers re-warm
after being immersed in cold water.
